Profile: Expert in African women’s history and gender studies, focusing on the impact of political processes on women’s rights. Research interests include Hausa women’s political identity from the Caliphate to the Protectorate, post-colonial state policies on gender relationships, and women’s access to land and labor in rural Nigeria and Niger. Published works include Gender & Citizenship: Hausa Women's Political Identity from the Caliphate to the Protectorate (2006) and articles on veiling, slavery, and feminist discourse in Africa. Former coordinator of the Swedish Gender and Development Network.
